Which options do you want to consider to improve your heart health?

Healthy lifestyle

If you want to have a healthier lifestyle, you can consider quitting smoking, eating more healthy snacks, having less sweet drinks, or doing more exercise.

Medication

If you are high risk you can talk to your health professional about medication to reduce your blood pressure and cholesterol.

8% Medium Risk

Here’s an example of
a
person with “medium” risk.

(This may be higher or lower than your risk.)

It means that out of 100 people with the same risk factors, 8 of those people will have a heart attack or stroke in the next 5 years if they don’t take action.

5% Medium risk

This person quit smoking. Their risk changed from 8% to 5%. This means they have a better chance of keeping their heart healthy.

OR
6% Medium risk

If you reduce your cholesterol, you can reduce your risk of heart problems. This person reduced their LDL or “bad” cholesterol by 1mmol/l. Their risk changed from 8% to 6%. This means they have a better chance of keeping their heart healthy.

OR
6% Medium risk

If you reduce your blood pressure, you can reduce your risk of heart problems. This person reduced their blood pressure by 10mmHg. Their risk changed from 8% to 6%. This means they have a better chance of keeping their heart healthy.

“That’s what you need to do, you can’t just sit there and let that doctor say this, and say that, you have to ask questions, so you know what’s going on with your body.”

“These are your options. This is how the medication can help you. You don’t have to be on it for life, but it’s about getting your cholesterol down, it’s about eating healthy, it’s about going on some walks, it’s about reducing your stress, it’s about having that connection to your community.”

“The options gives us control, it gives us that power over our own – making decisions about our own treatment and what we want and our own needs, and I really like that.”
